Guide

Support for challenging behavior

Challenging behavior can include aggression, property destruction, self-injury, elopement, or intense refusal that makes home, school, or community life hard. Families deserve calm, practical help without shame. Crimson Heights uses assessment-guided plans—especially Applied Behavior Analysis—alongside outpatient therapy and caregiver collaboration when mental health needs are also present.

Overview

Behavior support approaches

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) provides individualized support for communication, adaptive skills, independence, and reducing harmful behaviors. When anxiety, trauma, or mood concerns ride along, clinicians may also use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills, or Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) for youth. Family therapy and in-home ABA help practice strategies in everyday routines.

Overview

Where support happens

ABA and related supports can occur in the clinic, at home, and in the community when appropriate. Family therapy, occupational therapy, and in-home ABA are available at all eight clinics. Programs run Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 6 PM (Henderson from 9 AM to 6 PM), with Saturday appointments available. Youth day treatment and PHP at Utah clinics can add daytime structure when behavior and mental health needs require it.

FAQ

Common questions

Is challenging behavior only an autism service?

No. Challenging behavior can appear with autism, ADHD, trauma, anxiety, or other needs. Teams may recommend ABA, mental health therapy, or both after assessment.

Can support happen at home?

Yes. In-home ABA is available through every clinic. Staffing, authorization, and caregiver participation requirements are confirmed during intake.

How are strategies chosen?

Crimson Heights focuses on individualized, skills-based, and function-informed supports. Specific procedures are explained during assessment and consent processes.

What if behavior creates a safety emergency?

Call 911 if someone is in immediate danger. For non-emergency planning, text a clinic to discuss assessment and the right level of care.

Are caregivers part of the plan?

When appropriate, caregivers learn consistent ways to prompt, reinforce, and support useful skills. Family therapy is available at all eight clinics.
