Structured care between day treatment and outpatient

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides coordinated behavioral health support on a structured schedule with several sessions per week. Participants typically return home between sessions rather than staying overnight, and the program is generally less intensive than Day Treatment or Partial Hospitalization (PHP) while offering more structure than standard outpatient therapy alone.

IOP may be appropriate as a step-down after Day Treatment or PHP, or when assessment shows that routine outpatient visits are not enough structure. An individualized plan may include therapy, skills practice, group work, family participation when appropriate, and coordination with other providers. Exact schedule, clinical components, and fit are confirmed during intake at the preferred Utah or Nevada clinic.

What support may include

Individual needs shape the work.

01

Several sessions per week

IOP is designed as structured outpatient care with multiple sessions across the week, rather than a single routine outpatient appointment.

02

Therapeutic and skills support

Programming may include individual work, groups, coping and skills practice, and other clinically indicated outpatient components.

03

Step between day treatment and outpatient

IOP can bridge Day Treatment or PHP and standard outpatient therapy when a person still needs more structure than weekly visits alone.

04

Care coordination

The team may coordinate with outpatient clinicians, medical providers, schools, or other authorized supports to support continuity across levels of care.

What to expect

Finding out whether IOP fits

The exact sequence can vary, but every service starts by confirming needs, fit, and current availability.

01

Review the referral

The team gathers information about current symptoms, functioning, prior care, location, and whether a structured outpatient level is the referral question.

02

Complete an assessment

A qualified clinician helps determine whether IOP, Day Treatment, PHP, standard outpatient therapy, or another pathway may fit.

03

Confirm the program

Before enrollment, the team confirms clinical fit, schedule, authorization, components, and current capacity at the preferred clinic.

Common questions

Straight answers before you reach out

What is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

IOP is a structured outpatient behavioral health program with several sessions per week. Participants typically return home between sessions rather than staying overnight.

How is IOP different from Day Treatment or PHP?

Day Treatment and Partial Hospitalization (PHP) provide higher-structure daytime programming. IOP is generally a step between those daytime levels and standard outpatient therapy. Intake confirms which level fits; see the Day Treatment and PHP page.

How is IOP different from standard outpatient therapy?

Standard outpatient therapy is often one-to-one or family sessions on a less frequent schedule. IOP adds more structure across several sessions per week when assessment supports that intensity. Individual therapy remains available as a separate outpatient pathway; see the Individual Therapy page.

Is IOP available at every Crimson Heights clinic?

IOP is offered through every Crimson Heights clinic in Utah and Nevada. Intake confirms clinical fit, schedule, authorization, clinician assignment, and the treatment start date. A clinic address is not a same-day admission.
