Guide

Support when school feels impossible

School refusal is more than skipping class—it is persistent difficulty attending school because of anxiety, mood, sensory overwhelm, peer stress, or other barriers. Anxiety-related avoidance is common; NIMH notes that anxiety disorders can interfere with school and other daily activities (NIMH, Anxiety Disorders). Crimson Heights works with youth and caregivers through outpatient therapy, family therapy, and—when more daytime structure is needed—youth day treatment and PHP at every Utah clinic.

Overview

Therapy and family supports

Care often includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for anxiety and avoidance, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for values-based steps back toward school routines, and family therapy so home and school plans stay aligned. When trauma is part of the story, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) may be considered for youth.

Overview

Levels of care during the school day

Some youth need a structured daytime program while school attendance is being rebuilt. Youth day treatment and PHP are available at every Utah clinic. IOP is available at every Utah and Nevada clinic. Programs run Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 6 PM (Henderson from 9 AM to 6 PM), with Saturday appointments available. Coordination with schools happens through approved referral pathways and caregiver consent.

FAQ

Common questions

Is school refusal the same as truancy?

Not always. School refusal often involves anxiety, mood, sensory, or safety concerns that make attendance feel overwhelming. A clinical assessment helps clarify what is getting in the way.

Will you talk with our school?

With appropriate consent, teams can coordinate through school and agency referral pathways. Details are handled during intake rather than through the website form.

Can day treatment replace school?

Day treatment and PHP are clinical programs, not a school district placement. The team discusses how clinical hours and educational plans can work together for each youth.

Do Nevada clinics offer youth day treatment?

Youth day treatment and PHP are confirmed at every Utah clinic. Nevada clinics offer outpatient therapy, IOP, ABA, and related services; ask intake what daytime options fit a Nevada youth.

What if a young person is in crisis about school?

If there is immediate danger, call 911 or 988. For non-emergency planning, text a clinic to discuss therapy and levels of care.
